XuZhao, ASA 115, Week 5 Blog

For this week, we go through the reading " Doing mixed race dance." by Kieu Caroline Valverde, the author describes his growing up with  Vietnamese American community. Author felt isolated, and the word " space" best describe his history and background as mixed race.
Author has live in Bay Area for around 25 years, but there is still very challenging for him to fit into the society properly. And the most interesting part of the article is the ten questions he asked.
1. Males or Female
This part of the article surprised me, I used to think that female should regard more acceptable than males, but the result shows the opposite way. As a international student that study abroad, I relate this topic to Chinese immigrant status, and Chinese females better fit into the society compared to males, which is different than Vietnamese.
2. Your father or mother Vietnamese?
The articles indicates that the people that have Vietnamese father have better social positions than Vietnamese mothers, which is same as I thought. The children that has Vietnamese father always received good American education, because their father has study or work abroad for many years, and married with Americans  or Europeans, so their family background better fit into the American society. Some of the Vietnamese mother are political asylum from the Vietnam War, so their children are not accepted for both America and Vietnam.
The research shows that the wounds of the war not only affects those soldiers and citizens during the war, but also affect their future generations, compare to those mixed race children that live in Vietnam, author is very lucky he had a chance to born and raised in US. According to the articles that we did from Week 4, the mixed race children that live in Vietnam have been regard as dirty and humiliating, since Vietnamese think that they are the kids of invaders, and they represent the shame of their motherland.
