Kaining Huang
Week 1
The readings we have done for week 1 are "Invisible Monster" by Cindy Nakashima, "Miscegenation Discourses: Critical Contexts for Mixed Race Asian American Art and identity." by Weiming Dariotis and Lara Kina, "Race Mixings: A Brief History with Maps" by Arwin D. Smallwood, St. Augustine Coquina & Artifacts, 2003) and Tribal Enrolment. They address the topic of mixed races and historical developments.
The readings I will analyze is " Invisible Monster" since it focuses on the topics we have discussed during class. Asian, Africans and Latino immigrated to the United States, while they are not categorized to any groups. . Unfortunately, according to social perspective, they are looked down on by stereotypes perspectives. Specifically, their mixed races bring out impressions of mixed heritages such as culture, religions. The discrimination towards mixed races push them to choose specific race. Under this circumstances, mixed raced people choose races according to their preference or profits such as jobs and social status. As time goes, mixed race people have formed a large part of Americans and we hardly distinguish people of mixed race and people of pure blood merely by their cultures and behaviors. Also, people don’t give so much attention to the issue how mixed races matter nowadays.
Here is a link of video telling the difficulties of being a mixed race person: https://youtu.be/ob-qmfvnQVo
My problem for the next week is: How people deal with discrimination towards specific groups when they receive little help from the society?
