Week 5 Art Project (Kaishan Wang, Ziyang Huang, Zhao Xu): Flag

For the art project of week 5, our group has decided to design a flag by using paint, grass, leaves and old material from the pillow. As you can see, the background of the flag is in a pretty gloomy color; thus, the meaning that we want to convey in this environment is that the world is full of prejudice and bias towards the multiracial people, so their lives are turned into a dark side of the world, which is pretty pathetic and miserable. In addition, narrowing down at the end of the street is another metaphor of multiracial people’s lives. To be more specific, with tremendous different eyes from others, the multiracial people have received too much burden and pressure from the public. Hence, their rights in life have been greatly compressed; in other words, narrowing down the street represents `their lives have been suppressed and limited to a corner.

As for the red umbrella in the center of the street, it represents the multiracial people themselves. In detail, everybody in this world is the same, no matter what race they are and what skin color they have, and the multiracial people is not an exception either. Therefore, the red umbrella represents that the multiracial people themselves are giving their meanings to the world surrounding them, even though the world they live in is pathetic, they are still shining and glowing in it. Thus, the red color of the umbrella represents the attitude that the multiracial people using to deal with discrimination and prejudice existing in society.

As for the green leaves and grass along the road on the flag, it represents the fighting process of race-mixture people’s equality. We decide to use several symbols to represent the key elements, the moon on the sky represent the goal of race equality, the rainy background shows that this fighting process is saturated with challenges and suffering.
