Kaishan Wang: Week 5 Blog

In week 5, our theme is with respect to “Traitors Strike Back, Venerations: Hybrid Vigor, Cultural Bridges, Golden People, Race Saviors, and Ideal beauty”. There are several readings in the mix box relating to the theme: “Doing the Mixed Race Dance” by Kieu Linb Caroline Valverde, “Eurasian Hybridity in Chinese Utopian Visions-From ‘One World’ to ‘A Society Based on Beauty’ and Beyond” by Emma Tang, and “Root Bill of Rights” by Maria P. Root. I am very interested in one of the readings, “Root Bill of Rights” by Maria P. Root. Unlike other readings, this one seems to be a short poem, which essentially conveys the idea of the right for people of mixed heritage. The whole poem contains three paragraphs, and at the beginning of every paragraph, Maria used “I HAVE THE RIGHT…” to identify self-awareness for mixed-race people who, like any other races, deserve the same right and obligation in the society.
I personally rather appreciate such an inspiring poem. Even though it has no more than three paragraphs, I could feel a powerful energy inside every word and every sentence. Since I, myself, am a race-mixture individual, I am well aware of the hardship of being ignored, discriminated and isolated, which further stimulates my will to defense myself. Living in a world with discrepant races could be quite a spectacular view, but it, on the other hand, might render many unpredictable challenges and difficulties to us.
