Week 3

For this weeks reading, I will be blogging about the Queen of hearts card “Tomika,” by Forsyth Harmon. This weeks reading from the box mainly focused on mixed Asians who are half Japanese. We were able to get a feel about the modeling world for people who are mixed through various quotes. Throughout the reading, we are introduced to the term, “hafu.” Hafu means half. It is a term specifically used for half Japanese or half foreign. It is implied as a sexier connotation to describe half Japanese woman. In other words, hafu is another word that describes a sex ion of Japan. One of the quotes stated by Kozue Sato really portrays the meaning of hafu. The quote says, “…Hafu models are popular because…they possess both global (foreign) and local (Japanese) elements.” People desire hafu models because they represent foreign and exotic beauty but they also represent a sense of home or closeness to Japan. The desired look in Japan is the hafu look therefore; hafu models are seen all throughout the media. On the front side of the card, we see a cartoon picture of someone who looks hafu. The cartoon gives off different characteristics resembling someone who is definitely half Japanese.
My question for this week would be, why do most cultures not idolize/embrace people that look fully like their race/cultures?
