Week 5 Blog
For this
week's blog, I will be blogging about the "Bill of Rights for People of
Mixed Heritage." The Bill of Rights for People of Mixed Heritage is
rather a poem. It is very interesting that it starts with statements
that one does not have to do when being mixed race. I think it starts
with those statements because those are the most powerful. I believe it
really sets the tone of the entire peace. To me, I feel that grounding
yourself as to what you will not do is the most powerful. The second
part of the poem relates to identity. Identity is very important topic
when it comes to mixed race. This is something that is really hard for
many people to figure out. All of the statements are very powerful
because it goes to show how one who is mixed race will conform into who
they want to be, not the person their friends, family, or society tells
them to be. The last section really explains that a mixed race
individual will choose to do everything and anything their way. It is
their life, and they can choose how to explain it if they choose to do
so.
My question for this week is, when it comes down to having to pick a race for a mixed race individual, like for example, when filling paper work at the DMV or for your passport, how does one pick?
