This piece was inspired by the history of anti-miscegenation in U.S. history prohibiting interracial marriage up until when the Supreme Court decided this law was unconstitutional in Loving v. Virginia (1967). We redesigned the tarot card, which historically became popularized in medieval and early modern Europe, to conceptualize interracial marriage in a good light. From the play cards in the Mixed Race Box, we chose the 2 of hearts, which in tarot card language translates to “2 of chalices” and represents unified love, partnership, and mutual attraction. Traditionally, the 2 of chalices card contains an image of a man and woman of European descent joining in matrimonial union with the symbolic chalice. Instead, we utilize this tarot card to depict interracial marriage as equally ceremonial and sacred. Through this piece, we blur the boundaries of racial categories and challenge the divisiveness of racial hierarchy. For the back side of this card, we include a quote from Loving v. Virginia that overruled previous anti-miscegenation laws, ending all legal restrictions preventing marriages in the U.S. based upon race.

We like the concept and mixing of cultures and cards. Well executed as well. Good job.
