" Is it possible for us to distinguish between nation and race? and how we do that? "
As a student who studied abroad since Junior year in high school, I have lots of ABC friends ( American born Chinese), they kind of feel rejected in both America and China. In US, some white kids laugh at them because of their race, which makes them feels differently just because of their different skins, hairs, and eyes color. Moreover, when they go back to China with their parents, Chinese think that they are American, and they don't speak Chinese, so they are not part of our race.
They feels isolated in both places.
And when there are conflicts between their nations and race, the condition becomes even worse. Author gives the example of Nazi holocaust, and there was a other example which better illustrate my ideas.
After Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, US declared a war to Japan empire, but there were hundreds of thousands Japanese immigrants lived in California, and they have been live here for numbers of generations, and they also made a great contributions to California's agricultures and social development. US government forced them to leave their home, closed their shops, and sent them to the concentration campus in Nevada until the war ended. Although the US government treated them unfairly, but it didn't prevent the devotion of those young Japanese Americans. Around 20000 Japanese American joined American army to fight against Nazi in Europe, and thousands of them helped American Navy on translation in Pacific battle field.
