Week 1
Week one reading addresses various topics within mixed race. It focuses on mixed race identify confusion and discrimination and how history plays a major role in mixed race. In “Race Mixings: A Brief History with Maps,” it explores in depth of the human race by going back to the beginning. From this reading, the human race was originally from East Africa. This was the starting point and with time, gradually people started to move to different parts of Africa and to different continents, which impacted the origin of mixed race. This led to the blending of many races but also led to many wars between races. In the reading, it explains how the European’s came looking for land and how they inserted themselves as the more dominant race. There were many cases where the European’s had relations with the African woman or raped and kept African woman as sex slaves. Many mixed race childern were being born. There were many extreme efforts made to stop interracial relationships from happening. Many laws were put into place preventing colored individuals the same rights from the white folks. Because being colored or mixed race was looked down upon, many people thought it would be best to “pretend” to not be mixed. They would embrace their percentage of “white” more than anything else. It becomes easier and they felt that they would have a better life this way.
I am not mixed race but I can still relate to how mixed race individuals feel. It is hard for any race to feel fully accepted. We all believe that if we were white our lives would be ten times better. Being any race other than white feels shameful at times and that is completely wrong. Diversity is needed to flourish as a whole human race. Therefore, my question would be, knowing that diversity is beneficial and required, why do we still, to this day, impose diversity as a threat or a negative aspect to the human race?
